Since 2014, the United Nations has celebrated the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship with World Youth Skills Day on July 15.

At ChildFund, we have a unique focus on improving the social and emotional wellbeing of youth and providing opportunities for youth to be educated, employed and meaningfully involved in their communities. 

All around the world, we've met so many young people who are living life without purpose. Without the basics of reading, writing and maths, young people can't find work, which leaves them feeling lost. 

To recognise World Youth Skills Day, we're kicking off a new campaign to help out-of-school youth get on the pathway to a brighter future.

For Taianui, a young man in Kiribati, life hasn't been easy.

When Taianui was only young, his father passed away, leaving his mum alone to support the family. When she became too ill to work, Taianui dropped out of school to help. Without the basic skills to get a decent job, Taianui began selling homemade alcohol, which is illegal.

He knew he was going down the wrong path, but felt hopeless and unable to do anything about it... 

Through ChildFund's Building Blocks programme, young people gain confidence as they learn foundational skills in reading, writing and maths — the tools they need for the future! When they're ready, youth can enrol in vocational studies...

ChildFund is helping young people in Kiribati to learn practical, technical and soft skills to give them the best possible chance of finding a pathway to employment.
